There’s a place I’ve never been but have imagined more times than I can count: the African savanna, gold and endless, the kind of horizon that makes you feel small and completely alive. I don’t know when I’ll get there. But, I found a way to bring it into my canvas.

“Song from the Land” is the newest piece in my series For the Love of Music. She stands and pauses against that imagined horizon, guitar in hand, her hair loose, her earring catching the light. I built up heavy texture in the guitar and jewelry, so it shifts depending on where you stand, almost like the light is still moving across that land. The brushstrokes flow from the earth into her, as if the music isn’t something she’s making, but something she’s channeling.

That’s what this series is really about. The love of music doesn’t belong to one place or language. It moves through all of us the same way. A rhythm, a pull in the chest, no matter what horizon we’ve been dreaming of.
